Theory Tests
The Driving Standards Agency try to ensure that the theory test can be taken by all candidates. If you have any special needs, then you need to discuss these when booking your test. A headset with voice - over is available to assist people with dyslexia or any other reading difficulties. It may be necessary to request an increase in the amount of time allowed to take your test.
By using the most up-to-date study materials, you will be able to learn and understand the driving theory more clearly to become a better and safer driver. Your instructor will help you with specific problems during your lessons and clarify any areas you may be unsure of.
Before applying for your practical test you must pass the theory test. It consists of two parts.
The First Part of the Test
This consists of 50 multiple choice questions covering a wide range of driving topics. You wil have 57 minutes to answer the multiple choice part of the test. To ensure a pass you must answer at least 43 questions correctly. Before the test begins you will be given the opportunity of working through a practice session.
The Second Part of the Test
The second part of the test is called the 'Hazard Perception', this consists of a series of video clips showing everyday driving on the roads. You are expected to spot any hazards as they develop. The test includes 14 video clips, featuring one developing hazard, with one of the clips containing two developing hazards. The clips include various types of hazards, such as:
- Vehicles
- Pedestrians
- Road Conditions
You are expected to respond to each hazard by clicking a mouse button as soon as you see the hazard developing. These are defined by anything that may result in the driver being required to take some action, i.e. changing speed or direction. The sooner you spot the hazard and click the mouse, the higher you score. In order to pass the test you must score at least 44 points out of a possible 75. The maximum amount of marks available for each developing hazard is 5. Before you do the hazard test, there will be a short tutorial video explaining what you are required to do.
In order to pass the theory test you must pass both parts of the test. If you pass one and fail the other, you will not pass the test, so you will have to re-take both parts again.
In order to prepare for your theory test there are CD-ROMs covering both parts of the test in many stores. There is also resources available from the DSA - www.dsa.gov.uk and obtaining a copy of 'The Highway Code' is essential.
